چکیده

We explore the conformations of an isolated chain molecule as it approaches an impenetrable planar surface, by exhaustive enumeration of all the three-dimensional self-avoiding flights on simple cubic lattices. We confirm the well-known results that as a chain approaches a surface, the number of accessible configurations diminishes, so there is an entropic repulsion, and the radius of gyration becomes anisotropic and the chain flattens. Our principal observation here is that proximity to a surface causes a chain molecule to develop enhanced amounts of certain forms of internal structural organization, namely, helices and antiparallel sheets, the main architectures observed in globular proteins. In addition, we compare the process of adsorption ofi (i) chains that have no intrachain attraction (i.e., “open” chains); with (ii) chains that have strong intrachain attraction (i.e., “compact” chains). We confirm the well-known result that open chains undergo an adsorption transition onto the surface. However, we find that the adsorption of compact chains differs in one respect. Compact chains appear to undergo two types of transition depending on the strength of chain-surface attraction: (i) weak attraction leads to a “docking” transition, in which the chain adsorbs without much deformation; (ii) strong attraction leads to a “flattening” transition in which the chain adopts a two-dimensional ensemble of conformations on the surface.

Zeta potential and electroosmotic mobility in microfluidic devices fabricated from hydrophobic polymers: 2. Slip and interfacial water structure.

We discuss the structure of water at hydrophobic interfaces from the standpoint of its impact on electrokinetic phenomena in microfluidic devices fabricated from hydrophobic polymers such as Teflon or Zeonor. Water structuring at hydrophobic interfaces has been described as a source of interfacial charge (see Part 1, this issue), and dewetting phenomena, whether via depletion layers or nanobubb...

Molecular dynamics simulation of a binary mixture lubricant for use in hard disk interfaces

In Hard Disk Drives (HDD), it is necessary to decrease the Flying Height (FH) between the head and the disk (currently, FH is around 3-5 nm) so as to increase recording densities. Retaining the solid lubricant has become a difficult proposition owing to intermittent contact between the surfaces. ZTMD and Z are used as solid lubricant to lubricate these interfaces. In this paper, the behavior of...

Fabrication of 2-D photonic crystals using azo polymers

In this paper, we have reported the fabrication of two-dimensional photonic crystals, using a direct writing method in azo polymers. Periodic structures have been fabricated using the interference patterns of two coherent laser beams. The frequency response of the initial one-dimensional structure shows an attenuation of 19.3dB at 1554nm. The twodimensional structure shows 8.3dB and 11.3dB of a...

Preparation and Properties of Thermally Stable Polyureas Containing Ether and Ketone Units

The main objective of this search was to prepare novel soluble polyureas with improved thermal stability. Accordingly, a new types of polyureas was prepared through the polycondensation reaction of a prepared diamine containing ether, keto, and naphthyl groups with 4,4’-diphenylmethan diisocyanate (MDI), toluene-2,4-diisocyanate (TDI), and isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI) in N-methyl-2-pyrrol...

In situ non-linear spectroscopic approaches to understanding adsorption at mineral–water interfaces

Over the last decades, significant advances have been made in the study of adsorption processes at mineral–water interfaces. In particular, surface-enhanced infrared (IR) techniques, and, more recently, non-linear vibrational sum-frequency spectroscopy have provided novel insights into the structure and dynamics of these interfaces. The driving forces behind adsorption at mineral substrates are...

Interfaces of Macro and Microstructure in Academic Writing: The Case of Research Article Abstracts

Abstract Although flourishing research has been devoted to research on article abstracts, more studies are needed to unpack the relationship between rhetorical moves and their associated linguistic and rhetorical features (e.g., metadiscourse). To underpin this relationship, the current study analyzed a total of 60 research article abstracts written in English by two cultural groups in three di...
